About this site

Warm in January, Cool in July is a set of photo essays about heating and cooling a house in Fort Wayne and Allen County, Indiana, laid out like a wall calendar. Each month opens on a job or a problem that month tends to bring.

What it is not

It is not a contractor, a utility or a public agency. It does no installs or repairs, sends nobody to your house, takes no bookings and has no phone line. If your equipment needs work, call a licensed pro. If you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone out first and call 911 from outside.

How the essays are put together

Figures come from public sources named and linked in each essay: NOAA climate normals, ENERGY STAR, the US Department of Energy, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the EPA, the IRS, Indiana state agencies and equipment makers' manuals. Each essay's last section says what it rests on and what could not be read from the source itself.

Some local sources could not be opened when these essays were checked, including the Allen County and City of Fort Wayne sites and the NIPSCO and Indiana Michigan Power sites. Where that matters, the essay says so and tells you where to confirm. Rates, rebates and rules change, so check before you rely on one.

The people behind this site do not inspect homes or test equipment, and there are no customer stories here.

The pictures

Most pictures are real photographs, some of Fort Wayne and Allen County and some from elsewhere, which the captions and the photo credits make clear. Where no fitting photograph could be found, the picture is AI-generated and its caption says so.
